To Tweet or Not to Tweet. That is the Question

By Guest Blogger Melissa Dery

It seems like “everyone” is tweeting these days; from celebrities to politicians, corporations and even your own Direct Sales Company may be tweeting. Twitter can feel a little intimidating at first glance, I know I felt lost the first time I was on Twitter. What I found was that it has its own language, a fast moving pace, and a limited amount of space to express yourself (140 characters to be exact), but if you understand the real value and power of Twitter you will soon see what all the fuss is about.

Twitter is like warm chatter. When I was a consultant in direct sales my director was wonderful at warm chatter, she had a kind and friendly way to approach people when she was out and about. She took me with her a few times and showed me her approach. She would wander around the store and casually notice what people where shopping for, and look for something of interest to spark up a conversation. One thing she would often do was comment on someone’s earrings; she loved earrings so it was a natural and genuine conversation starter for her (for me it was about the shoes!). Her conversations really never were about getting the person’s contact information, or trying to sell her something, it really honestly and genuinely was about meeting someone new.

Your approach to Twitter should be similar to the way you warm chatter:

  • Take a look around – what are people “tweeting” about (tweeting is just another word for chatting or talking). Chances are you can relate to something someone is talking about.
  • Make a friendly comment – like my Director chatting about earrings or me about shoes, you will find something to comment on. I made the most wonderful connection with someone on Twitter who had tweeted about her allergies! We tweeted back and forth and our common “problem” with allergies and that created a genuine connection.
  • It’s not about getting something, it’s about the connection – Twitter is a way to network, to meet people you may have never had a chance to meet before. You will make friends, and maybe even prospects or customers but that isn’t what it’s all about, it’s about the connection you can make with people all over the world in short 140 character conversations.

I’ve made some wonderful connections via Twitter, including my connection to Julie Anne Jones! Approaching Twitter like you would any other social situation in “real” life by bringing your kind and authentic self to the party you will find a genuine and warm reception. Oh and while you’re there, please do stop by and tweet me a hello, my handle is @TheGoldenRuleVA … It’s always nice to meet new friends on Twitter!

Is Social Media Right for My Direct Sales Business?

Monday, August 17th, 2009
JenFong1
Today, Jennifer is my guest blogger and shares her insight into whether or not social media is for you.

Social media is the hot new “buzz word” in direct sales.  Your company most likely talked about it at your national convention.  You may see other consultants shamelessly plugging their businesses on Facebook.  (Buy my stuff!  Join my team!…NOT the right way to do this, BTW)  But you may be asking yourself:  Do I REALLY need to be involved with social media?  Will it help my business, or distract me from the things I should really be doing to make money with my business?  The answer is: it depends.

I believe that social media has an amazing amount of potential for direct sellers.  It gives us an opportunity to reach people we couldn’t have reached before.  It is FABULOUS for helping us get bookings and generate reorders.  Yet there are certainly right and wrong ways to use it (just like every social situation), and your decision about whether or not social media is right for your business depends on a couple of things.
  • First, do a personal inventory of yourself.  How comfortable are you with technology?  How well do you communicate online?  If you enjoy talking with others online through applications such as Facebook, you are able to type reasonably well, and it won’t take you a year and a day to accomplish a simple task on the computer, then social media is most likely for you.  However, if the thought of doing anything on the computer besides checking email gives you hives, then there are plenty of other income-producing activities that may be better fits for you.  And that is perfectly OK.
  • Next, do a personal inventory of your target market.  Will the people you want to reach be hanging out online?  Remember, the whole idea behind social media is to reach your target market, and establish yourself as an expert by providing valuable content that helps people.  If your target market isn’t going to be there to consume that content, you either need to identify the needs of a new target market, or find the places that you WILL reach your target market.
See how some strategic planning will help you make good decisions?  It is my firm belief that every successful social media marketing effort begins with a good strategic plan.

Social media marketing is a very exciting tool in the direct seller’s toolbox.  Direct sellers who are putting it to work strategically are universally reporting success, meeting new prospects, recruiting more people, and ultimately, making more money.  If you’d like to learn more about social media marketing and how it can work for your business, I invite you to check out my blog, where I provide free articles every week about using social media for your direct sales business.  You can visit my blog at http://jenfongspeaks.com.
