The first time you do anything, it feels uncomfortable. And the only way to overcome that feeling is to do it again and again until it feels comfortable. But what about in the interim? I recall about 25 years ago, when I first became an image consultant. I was working with professional women twice my age who were very successful – and very intimidating! Even though I sort of knew what I was talking about, my confidence wasn’t there yet in the material or in my ability to tell someone else how to dress! I had a few very uncomfortable, disastrous appointments until I was able to build my self confidence level and my overall knowledge of my subject matter.
That’s the first time I remember using the “fake it till you make it” concept. Since I have a degree in Theatre, I decided to treat this just like I would a role in a play. I decided to start at least acting like I knew what I was doing (even if I didn’t always feel like I did). So I adopted the role of image consultant, pictured myself as an expert, and started showing up for my appointments in that role. The difference was amazing! Not only did my clients start taking me seriously and responding to me in a completely different way, but I started actually feeling more confident and comfortable.
So, if you’re just getting started as a brand new direct sales representative and facing standing in front of people and talking about things that are still very new to you, realize that they’ve never seen your presentation before and have no expectations. Decide to step into the role of “expert, fun, comfortable representative,” and, no matter what happens, maintain that role. It will seem difficult at first, but the more you do it, the more you’ll begin to actually become the role you’re playing. It’s the quickest, easiest way to gain confidence that I’ve ever found.
